Watkins Elementary recently received a $1,000 grant from the Mississippi Recycling Coalition. This is the second consecutive year Watkins was a recipient in the grant competition. The grant will be used for promotional materials, collection bins, student incentives, and recycling / environmental awareness activities. Watkins currently collects paper (including cardboard), plastic and aluminum cans in their recycling program. Grant applications were evaluated by a panel of MRC members based on the amount of student leadership and participation in the recycling program; the emphasis on educating students on the benefits of waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting; and community involvment, participation, and /or outreach of the program.
In 2011, the Watkins Recycling Program Won 1st Place statewide at the Keep Mississippi Beautiful State Awards Luncheon. David Schommer and Marilyn Minter serve on the JPS District Recycling Committee. Mr. Schommer serves as recycling coordinator for Watkins.

For Mississippi, the TestRating is calculated using a school's 2010 Mississppi Curriculum Test (MCT) Results, Mississippi Science Test Results and Mississippi Subject Area Testing Program (SATP) Results for all subjects tested.
